A guide to choosing the right flooring for your home renovation

seattle flooring installation

Choosing the right flooring for your home renovation is essential, as it significantly affects the overall appearance and functionality of your living space.

To make an informed decision, it’s important to assess your home’s unique needs, including the purpose of each room, expected foot traffic, and any specific requirements like moisture resistance in areas such as bathrooms.

By understanding these factors, you can choose the flooring that enhances your home and serves you well for years to come.

Overview of Popular Flooring Types

There are many types of flooring to choose from, each with its own unique features and benefits. Popular options include hardwood, laminate, luxury vinyl, tile, and carpet. Each type offers different looks and levels of durability, making it essential to find the right fit for your lifestyle and preferences.

Hardwood Flooring

Hardwood flooring is a popular choice for its natural beauty and timeless appeal. It brings warmth and character to any room, with a variety of wood types and finishes to choose from. These floors are durable and can be refinished multiple times, making them a long-lasting investment.

However, they can be more expensive and require proper maintenance to keep them looking their best. If you’re looking for elegance that never goes out of style, hardwood is the right choice.

Average Cost: $7 to $12 per square foot installed

Laminate Flooring

Laminate flooring offers a cost-effective way to achieve the look of real wood or stone without the high price tag. It’s made of layers of synthetic materials fused, with a photographic layer that mimics natural materials.

It is easy to install, often using a click-and-lock system, making it a great option for DIY projects. It’s also resistant to scratches and stains, though it may not last as long as other flooring types. For those on a budget who still want a stylish floor, laminate is a versatile choice.

Average Cost: $7 to $12 per square foot installed

Luxury Vinyl

Luxury vinyl flooring combines style and durability, offering the look of wood, stone, or tile with the added benefit of being waterproof. It’s made from layers of vinyl with a protective top layer, making it resistant to wear and tear.

It is comfortable underfoot and works well in areas prone to moisture, like kitchens and bathrooms. It’s also easy to install and maintain, making it a popular choice for busy households. If you need a floor that looks great and can stand up to daily use, luxury vinyl is an excellent option.

Average Cost: $20 to $30 per yard installed

Tile Flooring

Tile flooring is known for its beauty and durability, making it a practical choice for many areas of the home. Available in a wide range of colors, patterns, and materials like ceramic and porcelain, tile can complement any design style.

It’s particularly popular in kitchens and bathrooms due to its water resistance and ease of cleaning. While tile can be cold and hard underfoot, it’s also incredibly long-lasting and doesn’t require much maintenance. For a floor that’s both functional and aesthetically pleasing, tile is a great choice.

Average Cost: $5 to $12 per square foot installed

Carpet Flooring

Carpet flooring provides unmatched comfort and warmth, making it ideal for bedrooms and living areas. It’s available in various textures, colors, and materials, allowing you to choose a style that fits your home’s décor.

It helps insulate a room, reducing noise and making spaces feel cozy. However, it can be prone to stains and requires regular cleaning to maintain its appearance. If comfort is your top priority, especially in areas where you relax, carpet is the perfect flooring option.

Average Cost: $22 to $35 per yard installed

Other Flooring Options

  • Concrete Flooring: Concrete is very strong and durable, great for high-traffic areas. It can be stained or polished for a stylish look.
  • Bamboo Flooring: Bamboo is a sustainable and eco-friendly option that looks similar to hardwood. It is durable and resistant to moisture, suitable for many rooms.
  • Linoleum Flooring: Linoleum is made from natural materials and is easy to clean, available in many colors and patterns, a versatile choice for homes.
  • Rubber Flooring: Rubber flooring is soft and cushioned, comfortable to walk on. It is also slip-resistant and easy to maintain, great for gyms or playrooms.
  • Plastic or PVC Flooring: Plastic or PVC flooring is waterproof and very easy to clean. It comes in various styles and colors, a popular choice for kitchens and bathrooms.
  • Plywood Farmhouse Flooring: Plywood farmhouse flooring gives a rustic and warm look to any room. It is affordable and can be stained or painted to match your decor.
A guide to choosing the right flooring for your home renovation

Factors to Consider Before Choosing Flooring

When selecting flooring for your home, it’s essential to consider several factors to ensure you make the best choice for your needs and preferences. These factors include your lifestyle, budget, maintenance requirements, aesthetic appeal, and environmental impact.

By carefully evaluating each of these elements, you can find the perfect flooring solution that meets your needs and enhances your living space.

Lifestyle Considerations

Your lifestyle plays a significant role in determining the right flooring for your home. If you have pets or young children, or if your home experiences high foot traffic, you’ll need a durable and easy-to-clean flooring option.

Hardwood and tile not be the best choices in these situations, as they can easily scratch or chip. Instead, consider options like luxury vinyl or laminate, which are more resistant to wear and tear.

Budget Planning

Flooring can vary greatly in price, so it’s important to set a realistic budget before making a decision. While cheaper options seem appealing, it’s essential to balance cost with value. Consider the long-term durability and maintenance requirements of each flooring type to ensure you get the best return on your investment.

Remember that higher-quality flooring may cost more upfront but can save you money in the long run by lasting longer and requiring less maintenance.

Maintenance Requirements

Different flooring types require varying levels of maintenance to keep them looking their best. Some options, like hardwood and tile, may require regular cleaning and sealing to prevent damage.

Others, like luxury vinyl and laminate, are easier to maintain and may only need occasional cleaning. Consider your willingness and ability to maintain your floors when making your decision.

Aesthetic Appeal

Your flooring should complement the overall style and decor of your home. Consider the colors, patterns, and textures of your existing furnishings and walls when selecting a flooring option.

Hardwood and tile offer a wide range of design possibilities, while laminate and luxury vinyl can mimic the look of more expensive materials at a lower cost.

Environmental Impact

If you’re concerned about the environmental impact of your flooring choice, look for options that are made from sustainable materials and produced using eco-friendly methods.

Bamboo and cork are two examples of sustainable flooring materials that are becoming increasingly popular. Many manufacturers also offer recycled or recyclable flooring options, such as luxury vinyl made from recycled content.

Room-by-Room Flooring Guide

Choosing the right flooring for each room in your home is important because different spaces have different needs. The below guide will help you understand the best flooring options for each area.

Living Room

In the living room, you want to create a warm and welcoming atmosphere. Hardwood flooring is a popular choice because it adds elegance and can be easily decorated with rugs.

If you have kids or pets, consider laminate or luxury vinyl, which are durable and easy to clean while still looking great. Carpeting is also a good option for comfort and warmth, making the space feel cozy.

Kitchen

The kitchen is a high-traffic area where spills and messes are common, so you’ll need flooring that is both stylish and durable. Tile is a great choice because it is water-resistant and easy to clean.

Luxury vinyl is another excellent option, as it can mimic the look of wood or stone while being resistant to moisture and scratches. Make sure to choose a flooring that can handle the daily wear and tear of cooking and entertaining.

Seattle Bathroom Flooring contractor

Bathroom

In the bathroom, it’s essential to choose flooring that can withstand moisture. Tile is a top choice because it is water-resistant and easy to clean. Luxury vinyl is also a good option, as it is waterproof and comes in many styles.

Avoid carpet in bathrooms, as it can trap moisture and lead to mold growth. Look for flooring that will keep your bathroom safe and stylish.

Bedrooms

When it comes to bedrooms, comfort is key. Soft carpet is a popular choice because it feels great underfoot and adds warmth to the space.

If you prefer hard surfaces, consider hardwood or laminate, which can be paired with area rugs for added comfort. Make sure to choose the flooring that helps create a relaxing and cozy environment for sleeping.

Home Office

In a home office, you’ll want flooring that looks professional and is easy to maintain. Hardwood or laminate can give your office a polished look while being durable enough for everyday use.

Luxury vinyl is also a great choice, as it can mimic more expensive materials and is easy to clean. Choose flooring that helps you stay focused and productive in your workspace.

Basement

Basements can be tricky because they are often prone to moisture. It’s important to choose the flooring that can handle damp conditions. Tile is a good option because it is water-resistant and durable.

Luxury vinyl is also suitable, as it can withstand moisture and is easy to install. Avoid carpet in basements, as it can absorb moisture and lead to mold. Look for flooring that will keep your basement looking great and dry.

Planning and Managing Your Flooring Renovation

When planning a flooring renovation, it’s important to approach the project carefully to ensure everything goes smoothly. This guide will help you understand the steps involved.

Step-by-Step Guide to a Successful Flooring Renovation

To start your flooring renovation, follow these simple steps: First, choose the right type of flooring for each room based on your needs and preferences. Next, measure the area to determine how much flooring you will need.

After that, create a timeline for your project, including when to buy materials and when to install the flooring. If you’re doing it yourself, gather the necessary tools and materials. Finally, install the flooring according to the manufacturer’s instructions, or hire a professional to ensure it’s done correctly.

Hiring Professionals vs. DIY

Deciding whether to hire professionals or do the work yourself depends on your skills, time, and budget. If you have experience with home improvement projects and feel confident in your abilities, DIY might save you money.

However, if you are unsure about the installation process or want the best results, hiring professionals can be a good investment. Consider the complexity of the flooring type and your comfort level with tools before making your decision.

Time Management

The time it takes to install flooring can vary depending on the type you choose. For example, installing laminate or luxury vinyl can usually be done in a day or two, while hardwood flooring may take longer because it requires careful installation and finishing.

Tile installation can also take a few days, especially if you need to allow time for grout to dry. Make sure to plan your renovation timeline based on the flooring type and the size of the area you are working on.

Budgeting Tips

When budgeting for your flooring renovation, it’s important to keep track of all costs to avoid surprises. Start by setting a clear budget that includes the cost of materials, tools, and any professional help you may need.

Be sure to account for additional expenses like underlayment, trim, and installation supplies. To avoid common cost pitfalls, shop around for the best prices, look for sales, and consider purchasing materials in bulk. Always leave a little extra in your budget for unexpected expenses that may arise during the renovation.

Common Mistakes to Avoid in Flooring Renovations

When renovating your floors, it’s easy to make mistakes that can affect the final result. Here are some common mistakes to avoid to ensure your flooring project goes smoothly.

Overlooking Subfloor Preparation

One of the biggest mistakes is not preparing the subfloor properly before installing new flooring. The subfloor is the surface beneath your flooring, and it needs to be clean, dry, and level.

If you skip this step, it can lead to problems like squeaky floors or uneven surfaces. Always take the time to check and fix the subfloor before laying down new flooring.

laminate flooring

Choosing the Wrong Flooring for High-Moisture Areas

Another mistake is selecting the wrong type of flooring for areas that get a lot of moisture, like bathrooms or kitchens.

Flooring materials like hardwood can warp or get damaged in wet conditions. Instead, choose water-resistant options like tile or luxury vinyl that can handle moisture without getting ruined.

Ignoring Long-Term Maintenance Costs

Many people focus only on the initial cost of flooring and forget to consider long-term maintenance costs. Some flooring types, like carpet, may need regular cleaning or replacement, while others, like tile, are easier to maintain.

Think about how much time and money you are willing to spend on upkeep before making your final choice.

Underestimating the Impact of Lighting on Flooring Color

Don’t underestimate how lighting can change the appearance of your flooring color. Natural light and different types of light bulbs can make the same flooring look different at various times of the day.

Before making a decision, see how the flooring looks in different lighting conditions to ensure you’ll be happy with your choice.

Not Choosing Professionals When Needed

Finally, one common mistake is not hiring professionals when the job is too complex or beyond your skills. While DIY can save money, some flooring installations require special tools and expertise to ensure they are done correctly.

If you are unsure about your abilities, it’s often worth the investment to hire a professional. They can help avoid mistakes that could lead to costly repairs down the line.

Conclusion

In conclusion, selecting the right flooring for your home renovation is a critical decision that impacts both the aesthetics and functionality of your space. By understanding the unique needs of each room, considering your lifestyle, and balancing your budget with long-term value, you can choose a flooring option that enhances your home’s beauty and comfort.

Whether you opt for the timeless appeal of hardwood, the durability of tile, or the affordability of laminate, careful planning and consideration will ensure a successful renovation that meets your needs for years to come. Total Quality Express is here to guide you through every step of the process, ensuring your flooring choice perfectly complements your home.

FAQs

How Do I Choose Between Hardwood and Laminate?

Choose hardwood for its natural beauty and long-term value, but be prepared for higher costs and maintenance. Opt for laminate if you need a budget-friendly, durable option that is easier to install. Consider the room’s purpose and moisture levels when making your decision.

Laminate and luxury vinyl are the best choices for homes with pets due to their durability and scratch resistance. Luxury vinyl is also waterproof, making it easier to clean up accidents. Tile flooring is another option, but it can be cold and hard for pets.

Yes, luxury vinyl flooring is waterproof and can withstand moisture without damage. This makes it ideal for areas like kitchens, bathrooms, and basements. However, it’s still best to clean up any standing water quickly.

For laminate, regularly sweep and vacuum, avoiding steam mops and harsh chemicals. For luxury vinyl, use a damp mop with a gentle cleaner designed for vinyl. Always follow the manufacturer’s care instructions to keep your floors looking great.

Radu and his team provide the highest quality of craftsmanship. They installed a new water heater, replaced a window, and fan in the laundry room. You can tell they take great pride in their work, and the attention to detail truly sets them apart. They used high-quality materials, stayed on schedule, and kept the project within the agreed budget. I highly recommend them for any project.

Radu and his crew at Total Quality Express are skilled craftsman that offer superb workmanship at a reasonable price. Radu is honest and dependable and completed a remodel at my Bellevue Townhouse that I was extremely pleased with. Radu has also completed a commercial retail buildout for one of my businesses. Taft and his crew consistently delivered and met, if not exceeded, my expectations. He is professional, transparent with costs, and offers affordable solutions. His reliability, flexibility, and hands-on approach gave me confidence to give him additional projects, including full remodel of two condo units. It is quite easy to communicate with him, and he is receptive to change requests I made even once after the project has started. I trust his judgment and highly recommend him for any renovation project.

As a property manager I’ve worked with more contractors than I can count and Total Quality Express have become my top choice for any project. I came across them when I needed a hearth created for a fireplace at a property a couple hours out of their service area. Radu was happy to meet in person for an estimate and provided reasonable pricing. Given the location, I wasn’t able to be present for any of the work and am admittedly OCD about details so texted him a lot during the job to ensure everything was done to my liking (he was so kind and patient with all my messages). The hearth was done beautifully (wasn’t easy to cut different sized tiles to perfection while installing on a platform in a corner-he is skilled at tile work).

I then had an unexpected need for flooring replacement at my home which was completed well within a very tight timeframe. Since then I’ve used Radu for all kinds of things including painting, cabinet installation, foundation and exterior repairs, extensive electrical work, you name it. I even had a sliding glass door that I thought needed replacement but he was able to make some adjustments to get it working good as new. What I really appreciate is how he thinks about everything in advance, he asks good questions to ensure projects run smoothly and have the best end result, there’s never a need for backtracking with him. I’ve given Radu checklists with 30+ things on them and he gets every little thing handled, you don’t need to follow up or remind him of anything which is refreshing. As we speak I have a couple projects I can’t wait for him to start on because I know they will be done amazingly well by him and his team.

I will add additional photos shortly.

Radu and his crew renovated 2 of our bathrooms. Prior to decided on signing with him, we met with 10+ other contractors, maybe a bit overkill but that really gave us a confidence to know who would be the best fit. Radu’s work ethich was awesome. He didn’t hard sell us on anything but brainstorm and guided us to the best optimal layout for our bathrooms, helped us consider pros and cons of each options so we could make decisions, instead of just do whatever we said 😂 which we really appreciated.

The crew was well detailed oriented and hardworking people. They went above and beyond on their tile work, paint touch up,… and we appreciate all the little things they did to make the final product great.

Overall, we would reach out to Radu again whenever we have a project and highly recommend him and his crew to others.

Working with Radu was one of the best experiences we’ve ever had with a contractor. He was the only one out of 6 contractors who spoke to me (a woman) and didn’t brush me off in search of my husband which was very important to me. The work, the timeline, the budget- everything was impeccable! I am so happy we found him and his crew and will absolutely use them again in the future. I love our new bathroom!

This is our second time working with Radu and team and we are very happy with the result! We wanted to open up our little jack and Jill bathroom to let in the natural light and make our shower bigger. They closed off the second door and opened up the space. Communication was pretty great and they were accommodating with our delay in getting some of the material. Most specifically the shower door (that Home Depot’s shipping company lost).

It’s been a few months, and our bathroom is looking and working great! Definitely recommend them!

Our slab floor had dropped in one corner. Radul and his crew came in after slabjackers did the floor lift. Total Quality Express finished leveling the slab and installed the floors. The floors turned out fantastic. In particular, they did a very nice job where the floor meets the sliding door. It was a more complicated fix due to the floor drop. Radu is very responsive and easy to work with and reliable. Will definitely work with him again.

Radu and Octavian have been great! This is the second project I did with them and they never fail to impress me with their work ethics and quality of work. I like how they are very attentive to details and don’t rush on their work. They will give you an honest opinion for materials I wasn’t sure to choose. They double check with you and clarify your instructions. They are very patient and would execute your ideas about designs. This will not be the last time I’ll call them for any home renovation projects.

We hired them to install all tile works and wood floors for a whole house remodeling project. The fireplace tile wall turns out great! Master bath walk-in shower does drain well as promised. I even had comments from another contractor once: “Who did your tiles? They did good job!”. The team was polite and punctual. Easy to communicate with as well. I would recommend this company.
